About the Producer

Allan Oviedo is a second-generation coffee producer who inherited his land from his father, Joel Oviedo, around 20 years ago. Initially selling coffee cherries to local mills at low prices, Allan worked as a taxi driver in San José to support his family and reinvest in the farm.

Over time, he transformed the operation by improving infrastructure and quality, eventually building his own micromill, Don Joel, named in honor of his father. Today, Allan manages the farm alongside his son Ignacio, continuing a strong family tradition in coffee.

About the Farm & Mill

Located in Costa Rica’s scenic West Valley, Don Joel is a 12-hectare farm producing around 350 fanegas per harvest. Despite its size, the farm operates its own washing mill, allowing for full control over processing and quality.

Coffee production is a family effort — several of Allan’s siblings are also involved in the industry, with neighboring farms contributing specialty lots to the Don Joel micromill.

About the Variety — SL-28

Originally selected in Kenya in the 1930s, SL-28 is known for its drought resistance, resilience, and exceptional cup quality. Derived from Tanzanian Bourbon lineage, it has gained global recognition for its complex and vibrant flavor profile.

Today, SL-28 is cultivated beyond East Africa, including in Costa Rica, where producers like Allan Oviedo continue to explore its full potential.

Processing Method

  • Ripe cherries are carefully harvested and depulped

  • Beans are mechanically washed for clarity and cleanliness

  • Dried using a combination of traditional and mechanical drying methods

  • Recently upgraded drum dryer improves consistency and efficiency
